Tips for working at home / sitting for a "living"

Hi everyone, I wanted to write a short message regarding sitting ergonomics while working at home. One of the first concepts we learn in ergonomics is that there is no perfect posture forever. Our frame and brain need periodic movement! With that said, there are a few things we can do to mitigate the mechanical stresses of sitting. First, when sitting at your desk / work table, it is recommended that you sit all the way back in your chair, to where your back is touching the back rest. The angle behind your knee should be at least 90 degrees & your thighs parallel to the floor. You want to be high enough in your chair to allow your forearms to rest on your desk, parallel or slightly downward. Your monitor should be about an arms length away and the center of the monitor slightly lower than the level of your eyes.

Remember, your spine, brain and eyes need breaks from working in one position, looking at a monitor at the same distance all of the time. Take micro-breaks to stand, move a bit, look 30 feet away for 30 seconds.

I hope this helps! If you need more personalized help, let's chat on your next visit! Sincerely, Dr. Joe
